Silicon Prairie News Interviews Dave Mark

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

About a month ago, I was invited to sit down with Adam Templeton of Silicon Prairie News. He wanted to talk to me about Intrinsic Algorithm, my book, the state of game AI, and – more relevant to the purpose of their site – the Omaha Game Developers Association. We had a great chat for about an hour in the library on the campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. What resulted was a 20-minute video interview.

I was very pleased to have spoken to SPN about not only my work, but about the possibility of a professional game development community here in Nebraska.
My thanks to Adam for an excellent interview and a pleasant afternoon.

Dave Mark Guest Speaker at Nebraska Game Dev Club

Friday, March 13th, 2009

I should have posted this prior to the event, but with pre-GDC crunch time, I have been more than a bit busy.

I was asked to be a guest speaker at a new game development group meeting at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln on March 9th, 2009. The Nebraska Game Development Club is an official university club on campus that just started in February. They have about 30 members right out of the gate ranging from programmers to musicians to designers and artists. (Unfortunately, they are a little short on 3D modelers and animators.)

I spoke just generally on the game business and tried not to scare them too much about how hard it is to get into the industry. One message that I conveyed was that, simply by forming the group and seriously working on some projects, they are already moving forward beyond the people who don’t have that hands-on, group development experience. That is, they are doing more than simply saying “I have this cool game idea!” That experience will set them well apart from the millions of people aged 10-40 that think they are going to create the “next killer game” or whatever.

Anyway, they have invited me back to take a look at their progress on the three projects they have going on. I’m looking forward to doing so. They have a good thing going on down there. I also plan on extending invites to the members to the Omaha Game Developers Association meetings once we get that reorganized.

And you never know when a studio in Nebraska might be looking for local talent, eh?

Omaha Game Dev. Assoc. News Blog

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

As part of our association with the Omaha Game Developers Association, I just launched a news blog for the group. On there, you can find announcements, news and updates about the group as a whole or about the individual members. Members who have attended a meeting will have author permissions (should they choose to use them) so you will also be able to find updates on what they are up to. If you are interested in the game development community in Omaha, check it out and remember to subscribe to the feed!
